2023 Volkswagen Tiguan Review

The  Tiguan has a premium and spacious interior, a large cargo hold and a composed ride. It’s also one of the few compact SUVs with three rows. However, its lackluster acceleration and finicky infotainment controls hold it back in the segment.

Pros

  • Upscale cabin

  • Large cargo hold

  • Comfortable ride

  • Composed handling

Cons

  • Slow acceleration

  • Distracting infotainment controls

Is the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan a Good SUV?

Yes, the 2023 Tiguan is a good SUV. With a comfortable ride, responsive handling and a long list of standard features, this VW has a lot going for it. It also comes with third-row seating, which is a rarity in the compact SUV class. The Tiguan isn’t perfect, however. Fuel economy is a bit below average for the class, the infotainment system controls can be finicky, acceleration is slow, and while it’s nice to have third-row seating, it’s quite tight back there.

Should I Buy the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan?

If you’re looking for a small SUV with three rows the Tiguan is certainly worth considering. However, if quicker acceleration is important to you, you’ll want to consider competitors like the speedy Mazda CX-5. Or if good gas mileage is at the top of your wish list, check out the fuel-efficient and well-rounded Honda CR-V.

2023 Volkswagen Tiguan Versus the Competition

Volkswagen Tiguan vs. Honda CR-V

The Honda CR-V is a well-rounded crossover that places high in our compact SUV rankings. It offers a nice cabin, a large cargo hold, spacious seats, a comfortable ride, good fuel economy and quicker acceleration than the VW. However, its starting MSRP is a few thousand dollars higher than the Tiguan’s. Unless you really need the Tiguan’s third-row seating, go for the CR-V.

Volkswagen Tiguan vs. Toyota RAV4

The Toyota RAV4 has a roomy cabin and great fuel economy estimates, and it’s priced similarly to the Tiguan. The Toyota also boasts a stronger engine than the VW, more user-friendly infotainment controls, a longer list of standard safety features and some mild off-road capabilities. It even has a hybrid powertrain option. However, it doesn’t offer third-row seating like the Volkswagen does. Both SUVs are good options, but the RAV4 is the more well-rounded vehicle.
